Time For NaNoWriMo!

Yippee! It’s that time again!  Time for all the zaniness, all the craziness, all the wackiness to begin!

What am I talking about?  Why NaNoWriMo of course!  And what, pray tell, is “NaNoWriMo” you ask?  Well, friends, fans, and neighbors, let me fill you in!

NaNoWriMo in the dreamchild of none other than Chris Baty, amazing person extraordinaire, who came up with the idea to challenge people to write 50.000 words in one month.  That’s right, you heard me, 50K in thirty days.  Sounds insane, doesn’t it?  Well…. it is insane!

But it’s also totally worth it.  Oh my word, there isn’t another roller coaster ride quite like this one!  You get an idea for a story line, develop a plot, figure out who your characters are going to be, and then you just… start.  You start writing, and you ignore that nagging voice inside of you, that “inner editor” that makes you want to go back and correct every little misspelled word.

The actual challenge doesn’t start until Novemeber 1, but participants begin getting their ideas together during October.  There is a flurry of activity going on at the moment, as regions in this country and others start building their member lists, and deciding where their kick-off meetings are going to be held.  Emails and messages are flying back and forth, as people discuss their plans for this year’s novel.  The last time I checked, Christ Baty said there were already over 20,000 members signed up for this year’s event, and that is truly exciting indeed.

I’m sure some of you are wondering, how in the world can meeting a deadline like that be any fun at all?  Trust me, I don’t know how it happens, but once you begin to write, and you start seeing your ideas take shape, it turns into the best fun in the world! Now I have a love for writing that I’ve never had before, and I plan on doing this “writing thing” for the rest of my life.
